Having grown up in Canada, the monarchy has always been a part of my life. But I've always been troubled with the history of it, and of the British Empire in general. Here is a woman who we revere greatly -and in many cases rightfully so-, but who is head of a family and legacy that has lead to the slaughter of millions to grow their dynasty and power throughout history.
When doing this portrait, I couldn't escape from that history, with all of it's beauty and violence. Yes, there was much nobility and wonder there, no doubt. But it's convenient how we've swept the rest under the rug.
So ask yourself when you look at "Queen": is that blood on her face? Or is it just the red of the Union Jack? After all, those are the only colours I used for this piece: the colours of the UK flag.
